You can start this quest at any point, and can complete it when you join the
Brotherhood of Steel and speak to Danse or Kells. The following quest steps are very fluid and can be completed in a variety of different sequences.

Travel to the
West Everett Estates near
Malden Middle School and
Med-Tek Research in the north central Commonwealth. You will discover a distress signal. Tune your radio and listen to the ping, following its intensity to the battle site and the body of Knight Varham. Listen to the holotape on him. You may report this now or continue your search.

Travel to the
National Guard Training Yard in north central Commonwealth. You will discover a distress signal. Tune your radio to it and listen to the ping, following its intensity to the National Guard Recruitment Office. Eliminate the
Feral Ghouls in the area and find the body of Knight Astlin. Take and listen to her Holotape.

Travel to the
Revere Satellite Array, being mindful of the
Super Mutant population in the area. Find and follow the distress signal to a shack on an array where you will find Scribe Faris. Listen to the Holotape on his body to receive Recon Bunker Access Code 429A.

Travel to
Recon Bunker Theta in the north central Commonwealth and input the access code 429A into the terminal. Go inside and find
Paladin Brandis. You may attempt a dialogue with him to resolves the matter peacefully or you may resort to violence. If you kill him, loot his corpse for
Paladin Brandis's Holotag and the unique weapon
Survivor's Special. If you resolve things without violence you can give him his team's holotags.

If Danse is with you during the quest, speak to him about Brandis when it's over. If you are still in Act 1 of the Main
Quests go
Cambridge Police Station for your caps reward. If you are in Act 2 of the Main
Quests go to
The Prydwen and speak to Kells for your reward
Steadfast Brotherhood of Steel Combat Armor Chest Piece

If you managed to convince Brandis to return to the fold you can see him at the cafeteria in the Prydwen and he will give you the
Survivor's Special and will join the Brotherhood in their fights during the main quests.
