Walkthrough
Elder Maxson tells you he has a pressing quest for you to undertake. Speak with him on The Prydwen. You are to find Paladin Danse and clarify what you've been told. He has fled, but Proctor Quinlan tells you how to find him. Speak with Scribe Haylen for more information.
Go into the northern wasteland and find Listening Post Bravo. Deal with the turrets, power the elevator and take it down. Deal with the Protectrons in the area and find Paladin Danse.
You may kill him right here. You may also threaten him. If it is not successful, he will give you a specific order. Comply and obtain Danse's Holotags. Bring these back to Elder Maxson at The Prydwen, who will make your rank a Paladin.
If you successfully threaten Danse, he will hand his tags over to you. Leave the listening post, where you will be interrupted on your way out. After a conversation you may decide to return and kill Danse, watch him kill Danse, or convince him to let Danse live. If you let him live you can tell Danse to remain at the listening post or he can accompany you as a companion. Return to Elder Maxson on The Prydwen to receive the rank of Paladin.

I've convinced Danse that he's a synth that embodies that Maxson is wrong about him. We're outside but everytime we both walk outside, Maxon is there, ready to execute Danse. That's normal, yeah? Well, this next part ain't; Maxson keeps walking away during the conversation. He keeps talking but after he gets a certain distance away, he comes back and executes Danse without a word. Help?

Is there any way to get this quest even if I got the minutemen to help destroy the Institute? I got as far as the Doctor Li quest and stopped there.

After letting Danse live and exiting the bunker, Elder Maxson will confront you. After talking for a bit an option to say "you'll be losing both of us" or something like that will come up, if you choose that will you then be abandoning the BOS questline? Thanks

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or the game is stuffing up but when I get the opportunity to kill danse I physically cannot kill him. I have tried blowing him up, shooting him in the head etc.
I truly wish that there were more branches you could take with this quest. After making my peace with Danse, I put him down. By far one of the hardest choices I have ever made in a Fallout game. I wish we could convince the BOS that everything isnt so black and white.
