Quests in Fallout 4 are varied in scope and depth. There are main quests, side quests, and miscellaneous quests. You receive quests from NPCs, prompts from Items you encounter and main story prompts. The game also features a radiant quest system where characters, locations, and other elements of the quests are randomized and can often be repeated infinitely. The DLC add-ons also feature their own quests which can be completed at almost any point in the game, either during or after the main events of the base game, and can even interact with some of the main quests in some ways. The Main Story plays out over the Act 1 and Act 2 Main Quests and continues in your chosen Faction quests. The base game comprises of 191 quests, with a total of 272 when all add-ons are included.
- See the Endings Guide for a breakdown of the different Faction endings and how to achieve them.
- To plan your playthrough, see the Factions page for an overview of when you will make other factions hostile during the main quests, causing that hostile faction's remaining quests to fail/become unavailable.

Fallout 4 Quest Guide
Fallout 4 includes main quests, side quests, and miscellaneous quests. Completing quests is a primary way to progress through the game. You will also earn experience points, acquire valuable items, and influence the fate of the Commonwealth depending on your actions.
Types of Quests in Fallout 4
In Fallout 4, there are three types of quests: Main, Side, and Miscellaneous quests. Main Quests follow the game's storyline and focuses on the protagonist's search for their missing son, Shaun, and their involvement in the conflicts surrounding the Institute, the Railroad, the Brotherhood of Steel, and the Minutemen. Side quests are not essential in completing the main storyline but these quests offer additional content and rewards. They often involve helping or interacting with various factions, settlements, or individuals across the Commonwealth. Miscellaneous Quests are a form of side quest but it has smaller objectives that doesn't form a complete storyline, but these quests provide opportunities for exploration and combat. These quests often involve fetching items, clearing out enemies in specific locations, or resolving disputes between certain NPCs.
Apart from the three types of quests stated above, there are also Faction Quests, Companion Quests, Settlement Quests, and Radiant Quests. Each major faction in Fallout 4 offers its own series of quests that advance its agenda and storyline. Players would often have to encounter a certain NPC from a faction during a certain mission or after progressing through the game. Companion quests are given to players once their character gains enough affinity with a particular companion, and completing these quests can deepen your relationship and unlock new abilities or Perks. Settlement quests come from settlers of your settlement and it often requires you to defend the settlement, provide resources, or resolving internal disputes. And lastly, as mentioned before, Radiant quests are repeatable quests that generate randomly and can be repeated infinitely, which can provide you a steady source of experience and rewards.
Save Often in Fallout 4
In Fallout 4, the decisions you make in certain quests will have irreversible outcomes and it is recommended that you often save first before making critical decisions or engaging in potentially dangerous quests. Saving frequently will allow you to reload to a previous save and try again if something goes wrong or the outcome isn't what you wanted.
Utilizing Pip-boy in Fallout 4
The Pip-Boy is a wearable piece of technology resembling a sizable wristwatch equipped with a small screen and several navigation buttons. In Fallout 4, the player character comes across and acquires the Pip-Boy early in their journey, establishing it as a good companion throughout their adventures. Having the Pip-Boy can be a very good way to track your stats and to track quests. This is also the Main Menu to which players can navigate.
The Pip-Boy also serves as a comprehensive display for essential information about the player's character, including health, radiation levels, and various stats. It functions as a central hub for monitoring quests and objectives, allowing players to review their active quests, access detailed quest information, and designate specific quests as active to receive guidance.
