Fallout 4 Nick Valentine Romance and Affinity Guide
Nick Valentine is a non-romanceable character, however, he offers a companion perk that can be gained after raising his affinity to the maximum level. You can do this by learning his preferences. Nick Valentine approves of the Sole Survivor when they're being nice or mean, and disapproves of peaceful and violent acts. These preferences are indeed counteractive, but in reality, your choices are always one or the other, and never at the same time. So make sure to refer to this table when you are trying to raise Nick Valentine's maximum affinity. Aside from that, Nick Valentine is a detective by profession, so hacking computers will raise his affinity. Donating, Giving Items, and healing Dogmeat are other actions that will raise his affinity.
Once you have reached 1000 Affinity Level for Nick Valentine, you will earn his permanent perk Close to Metal which gives one extra guess and 50% faster terminal cooldown when hacking.

Nick Valentine Fallout 4 Notes, Lore & Tips
- Fallout 4 Nick Valentine notes and tips go here.
- Nick, along with another detective used to work on Eddie Winter's case, one of the most dangerous criminals before the bombs fell. It turns out that Eddie was granted immunity to all charges against him. Nick's friend, seeing he has failed both with Winter and possibly his girlfriend, Jenny, ordered him to go to C.I.T. to treat his trauma. Instead of treating him, the C.I.T. used his brain to create their first Synth (The Prototype). When the synth didn't show the desired results, they cleared his post-C.I.T. memories and tossed him away. (Speculation based on: Operation Winter Holotape and a couple of dialogues.)
- Further proof that this occurred is found in Far Harbor DLC where DiMA another synth prototype of the same time, confirms that he and Nick where together in the CIT. DiMA explains that he was given free autonomy where as Nick was given autonomy from having memories given to him.
